Joy Macnab was born in Australia and qualified as a Nursing Sister and Midwife. After nursing in Australia and the United Kingdom she married and immigrated to South Africa where she became Sister in Charge of the Terminal Cancer Ward at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Softly spoken she is also a singer. Her love of music led her to attend the University of Cape Town Opera School. Her professional debut as an Opera Singer was made as the Priestess in "Aida" at the opening of the Nico Malan Opera House in 1971. Since this performance she has sung in many productions and musicals, won 1st prize in the Afrikaans Eisteddfod and toured six times with CAPAB.

Joy was designated with three Robben Island political prisoners and made many visits to them on the old Susan Kruger Ferry prior to their release.

After the death of her husband Joy became a Property Consultant selling in the Woodstock and Observatory areas. She has run her own successful business for 25 years.

Outspoken in her criticism of the Group Areas Act, Joy has championed the cause of the previously disenfranchised and often found herself in conflict with the authorities in earlier years. Today, Joy pursues her passion to fast track the secondary housing market in the townships from her office in Khayelitsha and advice office in Langa.

Joy has two sons, a Chartered Accountant and the other in London, a graduate from LIPA - Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts, U.K. She also has a grandson called Noah and a granddaughter Rania.

Joy's wish is that Observatory, Woodstock and Salt River retain their Victorian Character and that the Observatory Village Green never be built on, and that the Housing Market in the Townships continues to flourish.
